Nickel Eye: The Time Of The Assassins

Nickel Eye
The Time Of The Assassins
Rykodisc [2009]

Fire Drill Review:

Since the Strokes creative hiatus we have seen the band members branch out into some side projects with Albert Hammond Jr. doing his solo thing, Fabrizio Moretti in Little Joy, and now Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture has released Nickel Eye. It is a collection of mid tempo numbers that never quite break out of their shell but also are not that bad. The Time Of The Assassins features the guys from UK's South as the backing band plus has several catchy tracks in first single "Brandy Of The Damned", which has a very 311 vibe to it while "Back From Exile" has a Strokes attitude that works. At the end of the day nobody might remember Nickel Eye when the new Strokes album comes out or compared to some of the other stronger band side projects but given more focus and time, I wouldn't put Fraiture out to pasture yet!

Key Track: "Back From Exile"

Band With Similar Fire: John Frusciante
