Fire Note Says: Husky's debut has its moments that will stick in your head.
Album Review:
Husky is an Australian quartet that surprisingly have found their way onto Sub Pop's more and more eclectic roster. The group is named after front man Husky Gawenda and have been together since 2008 so going in you get the feel that a lot of thought went into Forever So.
The album is full of rich harmonies that place Husky in the currently growing indie-folk movement with the Fleet Foxes type bands but the group also polishes Forever So with flowing tranquil melodies that have a very UK vibe reminiscent of groups like Embrace or Travis which gives Husky a much different vibe when compared side to side to current trends. This is exactly the component that pulled me into Husky as Forever So's first half is an absolute stellar sonic listen. Songs like the opening "Tidal Wave", "History's Door" and "Dark Sea" all have staying power with their warm sound that makes you want to hit replay and dive into them again.
Forever So runs a bit out of steam in its second half as it stays a similar course but still has songs that stand out like the 5 minute "Animals & Freaks" that engage the listener and keep them connected with every line. The record benefits from the mixing by Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Joanna Newsom, Devandra Banhart) in Los Angeles as it soars with a pair of headphones. Husky have released a record that is worth checking out and even though it has its debut flaws the band shows great potential and has catchy singles that not only stand out here but could break the band if played in the right media.
